The relationship of the first witness, William Duggan, to the couple is unknown. He was probably a friend of the Groom. The second witness, Harriett Dowell, was the younger sister of the Bride and would have been just 14 at the time. On the marriage certificate the groom gave the same address as the bride. As he was a soldier he may have been staying there temporarily whilst on leave. Who else attended the ceremony is not known - probably the Bride's and the Groom's parents and their siblings who were living at home at the time. There was probably some sort of party at the Bride's home afterwards but whether the couple had a honeymoon is not known,

Military Service:
frm Jan 1905 to 26 Jul 1907 (age 18-20)
His Royal Horse Artillery Pension Record gives the date that he was discharged from the 18th Hussars. The date he enlisted is not known but it is assumed that it was when he was 18.
Military Discharge:
16 Jul 1907 (age 20)
the 18th Hussars; York8
The medical report dated 31 December 1914 which precipitated his discharge from The Buffs says that he had suffered from fits since he fell off a horse and was admitted to hospital (May 1907) in York suffering from cerebral concussion. His Pension Record says that he had formerly served in the 18th Hussars as a Private (No. 6858) and had been discharged on the 26th July 1907. He had been awarded a pension of 18d a day for 12 months and then 9d a day for 12 months.
Military Enlistment:
5 Sep 1914 (age 27)
The Buffs for 3 years service in the Army Reserve; Ramsgate, Kent10
In his attestation on enlistment he says that he had served in the 18th Princess of Wales Own Hussars and had been discharged as medically unfit. The reason for his discharge was that he suffered from epilepsy. However, because epilepsy is episodic it was not picked up (and he obviously did not mention it) at his medical examination on enlistment and he was found fit for the Army Reserve.
Military Service:
frm 5 Sep 1914 to 7 Jan 1915 (age 27-28)

He served for only 125 days.

Father:
12 Jan 1915 (age 28)
He reported his son Edward's birth to the Registrar H. G. Holloway on 12 January 1915 at Ramsgate, Thanet, Kent for the district of the Register Office for the district of Thanet. His father Edward was a Private in the East Kent Regiment and as he gave his address as 57 Plains of Waterloo he must have been living at home at the time in what was probably a married quarter.
Military Service:
frm 25 Jan 1915 to 13 Jun 1916 (age 28-29)
4th Home Counties Brigade Royal Field Artillery ; England and in the British Expeditionary Force in France10,11
On 25th January 1911 Edward enlisted in the Territorial Force to serve for 14 years in Kent or abroad. His Medical Inspection Report provides the following information on his physique:
•Age: 28 years 8 months
•Height: 5 feet 7½ inches
•Chest measurement: 37½ inchesExpansion: 3½ inches
•Vision: n (assumed to mean normal)
•Physical development: V.G.
On enlistment he was posted as a Gunner, appointed as an Acting Bombardier on 19th June 1915 and promoted to Bombardier on 7th August 1915. He served with the British Expeditionary Force in France as a cook in the Home Counties Brigade, R.F.A. Ammunition Column from 9th March 1916 (sailing from Southampton to Havre) to 15th May 1916 (retuning to England on the Asturias). 68 days service in France is a comparatively short time compared with the majority of the B.E.F. However, his Casualty Form shows that on the 7th May 1916 he was admitted to a Field Hospital suffering from epilepsy. He was discharged on the 13th June 1916 and awarded a pension of 12d day for 12 months from 14th June 1916. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
His Military History Sheet gives his Next of Kin as his wife – Louisa Alice Kelly living at 211 Hackney Road, E.
Military Enlistment:
25 Jan 1915 (age 28)
The Territorial Force for 4 years service in the County of Kent and abroad in the 4th Home Counties (Howitzer) Brigade Royal Horse Artillery ; London10
His enlistment was only 18 days after he had been discharged from The Buffs on medical grounds. On his attestation he said that he had previously served in the 21st Middlesex Volunteers for 2½ years and had been discharged as medically unfit (the reason is not given). This is the only mention of him serving in the 21st Middlesex Volunteers and may have been an attempt to deflect attention away from his discharge from The Buffs because of epilepsy. However, because epilepsy is episodic it was not picked up (and he obviously did not mention it) at his medical examination on enlistment and he was found fit for service in the Royal Horse Artillary.

His Pension Record and Medal Card give his Regimental No. as 1021.
His Statement of Services shows that on attestation he was posted as a Gunner, appointed as an Acting Bombardier on 19th June 1915 and promoted to Bombardier on 7th August 1915. His Military History Sheet and Casualty Form show that he served with the British Expeditionary Force in France as a cook in the Home Counties Brigade, R.F.A. Ammunition Column from 9th March 1916 (sailing from Southampton to Havre) to 15th May 1916 (retuning to England on the Asturias).

However, his Casualty Form shows that on the 7th May 916 he was admitted to a Field Hospital suffering from epilepsy. His Military History Sheet shows that he was discharged on the 13th June 1916. He was awarded a pension of 12d day for 12 months from 14th June 1916.
His Military History Sheet and Medal Card show that he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
His Military History Sheet gives his Next of Kin as his wife Louisa Alice Kelly living at 211 Hackney Road, E.

The family which numbered 10 in all had the whole house to themselves. There is no indication of the size of the house. However, nearby houses in Phillip Street occupied by more than 1 family appear to have 4 rooms so it is assumed that there were 4 rooms probably split up as a living room, the parents bedroom, a bedroom for the boys and a bedroom for the girls. In addition there was probably a scullery with a copper for use on washdays which may also have served as a kitchen and a privy in the yard.
