Address: Semley, Wiltshire
His parents woul have been present but who else is not known
Occupation:
frm 1823 to 1863 (age 11-52)
The 1841, 1851 and 1861 Censuses and the register entry for his death all give his occupation as an agricultural labourer. It is assumed that he started work at the age of 12 and worked until 3 months before his death when he was diagnosed as having cancer. It would appear from the Censuses that he moved around within Semley so he was probably hired at annual hiring fairs.
Death:
27 Feb 1864 (age 52)
Cause: cancer of the liver and duodenum
It is known from the register for the marriage of his daughter Thirza to Charles Mould that he was no longer alive on 9 Jul 1865.
Burial:
5 Mar 1864 (age 52)
Address: Semley, Wiltshire
His wife Arabella probably attended his burial and also some of his children including his daughter Julia who reported his death to the registrar.
The date of his death recorded on his gravestone (27 February 1861) is incorrect. In 1861 James would have been 49. Also he is recorded in the 1861 Census which was taken on 7 Apr 1861. The register entry for his death shows that he died on 27 February 1864 when he was 52 which accords with his age given on the gravestone. It is assumed that the gravestone was erected by his relatives after his wife died in 1885 and either they made an error in providing the stonemason with the date or the stonemason made an error which was not noticed (unlikely).

Mary is shown as being deaf and dumb from birth. The address covered two cottages which were associated with Billhay Farm where James Bowells farmed 150 acres employing 3 men and 2 boys. James was probably one of the men and George Ball one of the boys.
