The 1871 and 1881 Censuses give a calculated year of birth of 1835 whilst the 1851 Census make it a year earlier. All agree that he was born in Shoreditch. A search of the IGI failed to find a baptismal record which may have provided a more accuate birth date.

It is not certain when he became a type founder. In the 1851 Census taken when he was 16 he is shown as a labourer and he does not appear to have been recorded in the 1861 Census. However, he is shown as a type founder in the 1871 and 1881 Censuses. It is assumed that he trained around the age of 20 and continued to work until his death 1n 1883. Whether he worked for the same employer is not known as in the 1871 Census he is living in Bethnal Green (as he was in 1851) but moved to Shoreditch sometime between 1871 and 1881 where he remained until the end of his life. As the two districts are only about a mile apart he could have stayed with same employer.

The household consisted of John; his wife Harriett; their children John, Frederick, Hezekiah, George & Emily; and two lodgers Hezekiah Dowell who was Harritt's brother and William Navis who was unrelated. They shared the house wth the family of Thomas Dowell who was another brother of Harriett. Harriett was employed as a box maker although it doesn't say what type of box. Fancy paper box making was a typical home working occupation. It only paid a pittance but it could have provided a useful supplementary income In all there were 12 people in the house. The size of the house is unknown.
