The register entry for his marriage to Mary Perry in 1845 gives his occupation as a cow keeper. the 1851 Census as a milkman, the 1861 Census as a cow keeper and coal dealer, the 1871 Census as a coal merchant, and the 1881 Census as a labourer. By the time of the 1891 Census when he was recorded as 70 but probably only 66 he had retired.
As a cow keeper he probably kept a few cows (possibly as few as one) and sold milk from his house. As a coal merchant he probably delivered coal but it would seem that the business failed and he had to resort to labouring.
