  • The register entry for his marriage to Mary Perry in 1845 gives his occupation as a cow keeper. the 1851 Census as a milkman, the 1861 Census as a cow keeper and coal dealer, the 1871 Census as a coal merchant, and the 1881 Census as a labourer. By the time of the 1891 Census when he was recorded as 70 but probably only 66 he had retired.

    As a cow keeper he probably kept a few cows (possibly as few as one) and sold milk from his house. As a coal merchant he probably delivered coal but it would seem that the business failed and he had to resort to labouring.

    Richard Hill was probably a friend of the Groom. Elizabeth Tomlinson was probably the Groom's sister. Why there were no witnesses from the Bride's family is not known. Both the Groom's and the Bride's fathers were dead but whether their mothers were alive and whether they had siblings (apart from Elizabeth) who could attend is also not known.
