It is not known when he became a carman - he probably started work at the age of 14 as a van boy. Judging from the two censuses in which the type of employment is given - in 1881 he is working for a brickyard and in 1911 a garbage contractor - he worked for a number of employers. He probaby stopped working when he was 65 when he became eligible for an Old Age Pension of 10/- a week.
