  • The Portsmouth City Police was set up in 1836, however, William did not join until sometime between the baptism of his son Alfred in March 1839 when he is shown as a wood and coal dealer and the 1841 Census in June 1841 when he is recorded as a policeman. By the time of the 1851 Census he is an Inspector and he is also shown as an Inspector in the register entry for his son George's marriage to Harriett French in September 1863. When his son married again in May 1875 he is shown as a gentleman in the register entry which presumably meant that he had retired from the police force. He probably retired at the age of 60.
