Birth:
1850
Initially her year of birth was calculated from her age (22) given in the 1871 Census which also gives her birthplace but not her maiden name. However, her death registration in June 1890 gives her age as 39 which would mean that she was born in 1851. Where the information came from is not known but on the assumption that she would be more likely to know her own age in 1871 than a relative would in 1890, 1849 was the preferred year. However, once her maiden name was established from her marriage to Charles Dowell it was possible to find her birth registration which showed that she was born in 1850.

Samuel Day is thought to be the bride's father and Harriett Pope was the groom's sister. Who else was present is not known but as it was Christmas Day it is probable that most of their families were present. This would almost certainly have included John Pope (Harriett's husband), the groom's father Hezekiah Dowell and his second wife Elizabeth, and the bride's parents.
As at the time of their marriage they were living within a few doors of each other in Old Bethnal Green Road probably with their parents so they almost certainly met though being neighbours. After their marriage they lived in a single room sharing a house with John and Harriett Pope in the same street (see 1871 Census).

The household consisted of Charles and his wife Emma. They shared the house with Charles' sister Harriett who was married to John Pope, and their the Pope's son John. The size of the house is unknown but it was probably small.
