  • Address: Holberton, Devon

Winifred had an illegitimate daughter (the father is not known) about 1945. When Winifred told her mother that she was pregnant her mother 'threw her out' and told her 'not to darken her door again' until she had got rid of the child. The child was adopted by the Ward Sister of the maternity unit who wanted a child of her own.

The above information came from a conversation between Pat Ward and Ann Fretter who was the daughter of Alfred and Winifred. Ann said that she had been told by her mother that she had a half-sister but she had never met her and did not know her name.

A search of Birth Registrations between 1943 and 1950 using the Surname Davis with a Mother's Maiden Name of Luscombe did not produce any results. However, a similar search using the Surname Luscombe and the Mother's Maiden Name of Luscombe gave two possible results:-

    Rose M. LuscombePlymouthOct-Dec 1945

In 1945 in patient maternity services for Plymouth were provided by Flete House Maternity Home, Holberton, because of lack of facilities at Greenbank Hospital. The birth of babies born in Flete House would have been registered in the Plympton registration district. Thus it is thought that the Jan-Mar 1945 registration is the more likely.

  • Adoption:

  • 1945 (age 0)

  • Plymouth, Devon4

  •

  • As her mother could not return home with her child she was adopted by the Ward Sister of the maternity unit who wanted a child of her own. As her name would have been changed on adoption and her new name is not known it is not possible to determine more of her history.
