Clapham, London6

The household consisted of Gilbert, his wife Violet and their son Derrik. They had 3 rooms and shared the house with another couple who had 6 rooms. Although the return has been filled in and signed by Gilbert to show that he was there on the night of the census his entry has been crossed out in green ink and annotated 'Holiday - Devon - Dawlish'. Presumably Gilbert filled out the form prior to the census and Violet told the enumerator who collected the forms that Gilbert had not been there on the night of the census. Certainly the boxes on the number of persons present which were filled in by the enumerator showed that only Violet and her son were there.
Gilbert is not recorded in Dawlish so he may have been camping - it is known that he liked camping.
Tthey had a son Donald Robert Boyce Boyle. Don as he was known in later life, was born at the house of his Godmother, Nancy Boyce, who was his mother's great friend.
At the time Gilbert was already married although the marriage had been dissolved; whether formally, by mutual consent or by desertion is not known so his parents could not marry although Gilbert maintained contact with his son in the early years. Apparently they all went on a camping holiday together when Don was young. Doris' sister Winifred tried to persuade them to live together so as to give Don 'a home'. Why this didn't happen is not known and Doris and Don lived with Doris' parents (Don's grandparents), William and Emily Rosam, at 10 Grove Road, Thornton Heath, until Don left home in 1950 to join the Royal Marines. Doris continued to work to support her son so in his early years Don was mainly looked after by his grandparents.
How Doris and Gilbert met is not known but Don's birth certificate shows his father to be a 'merchant motor and electrical' and his mother to be a 'private secretary in an electrical company'. Although the term 'merchant motor and electrical' is not fully understood it implies he sold electrical equipment probably as a commercial traveller and so he may well have met Doris when he called on the firm where Doris worked.12
