Individual Events and Attributes

  • Birth:

  • 1867

  • Totnes, Devon1 2 3

  •

  • The 1891 census gives his birthplace as Devonport. However, both the 1881 and the 1911 Censuses give his birthplace as Totnes. It is therefore thought that there was a recording error in the 1891 Census. All three Censuses agree on his year of birth, however, his birth registration could not be found.

  • Census 1881:

  • 3 Apr 1881 (age 13-14)

  • 4 Pollimore Square, St Sidwell, Exeter, Devon4

  •

  • The household consisted of Eliza Street, her daughter Caroline Couldridge and her grandson Thomas Couldridge who was presumably Caroline's son. The family were sharing the property with another family of three where the father and son were tailors. It would appear from the trades given for the residents of the surrounding properties that the Pollimore Square properties were shops and the residents were shopkeepers and their families and sometimes employees. Thomas, although only 14 is working as a tailor.

  • Parents:

  • 13 Jun 1894 (age 26-27)

  •

Thomas and Eveline Couldridge were present at the burial of their child Beatrice on 13 June 1894 in St Andrew's Churchyard, Stoke Damerel, Devonport, Devon according to the Church of England rite. The minister at the burial was the Rev. W Mautte. It is virtually certain that her parents attended the service and the interment and her older sister Evelyn may also have been present.

  • Occupation:

  • btw 1897 and 1927 (age 29-60)

  • -; H. M. Dockyard, Devonport, Devon5

  •

  • an electrical wireman|| An electrical wireman was classified as a skilled labourer. When he started is not known but in view of his occupation given in the 1891 Census it is assumed around the age of 30. It is also assumed that he worked until he was 60 which would have been the normal retirement age for an established worker in the Dockyard.

  • Death:

  • 1928 (age 62)

The household consisted of Thomas, his wife Evelyn and their two daughters (Evelyn and Beatrice). The family occupied a single room in a 10 roomed house. There were 5 other families in the house; two occupied one room, one occupied one room and two occupied three rooms. In all 17 people lived there. Thomas is described as a Domestic Servant, R.N.. Whether this means that he was a Steward in the Royal Navy or a civilian servant in the Wardroom of one of the Navy's shore establishments is not known. Although the return has the annotated Sea R.N. the latter is considered more likely as a Naval record could not be found.

  • Census for household (not recorded):

  • 31 Mar 1901 (age 33-34)

  •

  •

  • No trace of Thomas, Evelyn or their children Evelyn and Beatrice could be found in the 1901 Census although all were known to be alive at the time. As they were shown living in Pembroke Street, Devonport in the 1891 and 1911 Censuses it is possible that they were living in Pembroke Street at the time of the Census but were missed.
