Alfred, who was a Sick Berth Attendant (SBA) in the Royal Navy, 'ran off' with a Wren (member of the WRNS). In his job as a SBA he would have come into contact with Wrens. Family gossip says that Winifred was so uset by the event that she threw her wedding ring into the water from Halfpenny Bridge, Stonehouse.
