  • the 1871, 1881,1891 and 1901 Censuses|| a labourer|| The exact date when he started work is uncertain but it was probably around the age of 12 when he probably started work as an errand boy, as his older brother Thomas had done, and then gravitated to labouring when he became stronger say around the age of 17. It is virtually certain that he was a casual worker for all of his working life getting employment wherever he could. For example, the 1871 shows him as a labourer, 1881 Census shows him as a bricklayer's labourer, the 1891 Census shows him being employed as a general labourer, whilst the 1901 Census indicated that he is a general labourer but not working.
