  • Henry was born before the registration of births, marriages and deaths started in 1837 and thus he did not have a birth certificate. The date of his birth is based on the date of his Baptism (7 May1823). As it was normal practice for a child to be baptised shortly after birth John's birth date is estimated to be April 1823.Eleanor was born before the registration of births, marriages and deaths started in 1837 and thus she did not have a birth certificate. The date of her birth is based on the date of her Baptism (2 January 1820). In the register the occupation of Henry's father, John, is shown as victualler and Pigot's Directory shows that he was the landlord of the Commercial Inn so it is assumed that Henry was born there.

Individual Note

has proved difficult to track. He does not appear in either the 1851 Census or the 1861 Census and a seach for his death registration gave a Henry Donn Luscombe who died in 1867 aged 44 and who death was registered in Stke Damerel. This is almost certainly Henry Down Luscombe as the age is correct and the second given names are so unusual and similar. The discrepancy is probably accounted for by a transcription error in either the baptismal record or the death registration. This leaves the problem of why and when he moved from Totnes and propaby settled in Devonport near to his brother John. As a skilled confectioner he would probably not have had much difficulty in finding work.
