1834, Register Entry for Baptism of Samuel Sleep

  • Birth:

  • May 1834

  • Penport, Altarnun, Cornwall1 2 3

  •

  • His baptimal record does not give his date of birth. However, as it was normal practice to baptise children a few weeks or even a few days after their birth and as he was baptised on 21 June he was almost certainly born in early Junel. It is assumed that he was born in the house in Penport, Altarnun where his parents lived all their married lives.

  • Baptism:

  • 10 Jun 1834 (age 0)

  • St Nonna's Church4

  •

  • Address: Alternun, Cornwall

His parents and probably his older surviving siblings John, Isabella, Amelia and Edwin

  • Census (living with parents):

  • 6 Jun 1841 (age 7)

  • 1841 Census - living with parents

  • Occupation:

  • btw 1844 and 1853 (age 9-19)

  • -; Altarnun, Cornwall5

  •

  • a tin mine labourer.||There were number of tin mines in the parish of Altarnun so it is impossible to say which mine he worked in. It is assumed that he started work at the age of 14 and continued until his death.

  • Guest:

  • 1 Jan 1850 (age 15)

  • Present at Baptism of Richard Sleep

  • Present (sibling):

  • 4 Feb 1850 (age 15)

  • Present at the burial of his sister Isabella

  • Census (living with parents):

  • 30 Mar 1851 (age 16)

  • 1851 Census - living with parents

  • Emigration:

  • btw 1852 and 1861 (age 17-27)

  • from Altarnun, Cornwall5 6

  •

  • There are no census records for Samuel after the 1851 Census. Thus he must have either died or emigrated. Although there is a death registration for a Samuel Sleep in the Launceston area (which covers Altarnun) there is no associated record of his burial in Altarnun on the FMP website which is based on Cornish Family History Society transcripts although he would have almost certainly been buried there. There are records for two Samuel Sleeps one buried in the Wesleyan cemetery in Launceston and the other in the Methodist cemetery at Tregadillet. Neither are likely final resting places for Samuel who was baptised into the Church of England. It is therfore highly that he emigrated to one of the many countries where Cornish tin miners were in demand.
