Without further research the only evidence of his military service is his medal card which shows that he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. As he was not awarded the 1914 Star it means he did not serve in France or Belgium between the outbreak of the war (5 Aug 1914) and midnight 22 Nov 1914 (the end of the first battle of Ypres). This indicated that he was probably a volunteer and not a regular soldier. Award of the War and |Victory Medals indicates that he took part in active fighting.
