  • An English women who married a German citizen between 1 April 1914 and 31 March 1953 automatically acquired German citizenship. The law before 1 April 1914 (Lillian married Ernst Schleich in 1902) is not known but it is assumed that she became a German citizen through her marriage. As a German citizen when war broke out between Great Britain and Germany she had to appear before a tribunal which determined whether she should be interned. The tribunal decided that she did not pose a risk to national security and she was not interned.

    Emily was Lilian's mother; the relationship of the other witness to couple is not known. The marriage took place by licence - an Allegation - because Ernest was German. The Allegation acknowledges that Lilian was underage but that she has the permission of her mother to marry (her father was dead).

They also had a live in servant Emily Groves and were living ins a five roomed house in a middle class part of London. Ernst is now shown as having independent means which is a step up from the electrician shown on his marriage register entry. Where the money had come from is not known - perhaps his father had died.
