She was killed when a German aircraft which had been shot down fell on their bungalow around lunhtime. It also destroyed the next door semi-detached bungalow Suncot killing its occupant Edward Leonard Vincent. The 17th February was a Saturday and on Saturdays it was Florence's normal practice to go shopping in, have lunch and go to the library but on that particular day she had returned early to prepare for a friend who was coming to lunch. Had she not so she would not have been killed. At the time her husband William who was a schoolmaster was in Tonbridge where he was the billeting officer for Westminster City School which had been evacuated from London to Tonbridge at the start of the war. As well as the bungalow in Rustington they had a house in Harrow on the outskirts of London and Flo had moved to Rustington because they thought she would be safer. The Harrow house survived the war.
