school mistress; the school in3
Address: Pill, Somerset
The only evidence that she was the school mistress comes from the 1841 Census. However, given the nature of communities such as Pill it is assumed that she started at an early age and retired when she was 65.
Census:
30 Mar 1851 (age 70)
Pill, Easton in Gordano, Somerset4
The household consisted of Mary and her niece Charlotte Adams. Mary is shown as an annuitant and Charlotte as a nurse so presumably she was looking after Mary although the Census does not indicate that Mary was infirm. It would appear that they had the whole house or cottage to themselves. However the Census record gives no indication as to its size or where it was within the village.
Census 1861:
7 Apr 1861 (age 79-80)
18, Pill Street, Pill, Somerset5
The houshold consisted of Mary and her niece Elizabeth (age 12). Whether the relationship was by blood or collateral is iunknown although given the difference in their ages Elizabeth is more likely to have been the great-niece of Mary.
Death:
Dec 1864 (age 82-83)
Beaminster, Somerset6
Spouse:
Marriage:
1805 (est) (age 23-24)
Census 1841:
6 Jun 1841 (age 59-60)
Pill Street, Pill, Somerset7
The household consisted of Thomas and his wife Mary. Thomas is shown as being of independent means but it is not possible to determine its source. It is possible that he was living on his wife's income as a school mistress but given the fact that Pill was the home of many mariners he may well have had a successful trading career.
