Name:
Edward Darling1
Sex:
Male
Father:
-
Mother:
-
Birth:
1834
The 1901 Census gives his age as 67 which gives a birth year of 1834. A year later his death registration give his age as 64 which gives a birth year of 1838. Either is reasonable relative to the ages of his sons given in the 1901 Census.
Occupation:
frm 1844 to 1902 (age 9-68)
The records which show his occupation all indicate that he worked with animals. The eariest record is the marriage of his son Edward to Mary Wallace in 1900 where he is shown as a care taker which is thought to mean that he cared for animals. As his son's address is given as the townland of Gortatole in the parish of Killesher it is fairly certain that is where he was working. The next record is the 1901 Census where he shown working as a herd on his smallholding in the townland of Gortatole in the parish of Killesher, Co Fermanagh. The last record is his death registration which showns that he died at Gotatole and that his occupation was a herd. As he could not read or write his education was minimal if any and he probably worked from the age of ten or even earlier. Where he worked prior to 1900 is no known but it was probably in the townland of Gortatole and he may have taken over his smallholding in Gotatole from his father.
May have attended:
3 Aug 1900 (age 65-66)
Edward may have been present at the marriage of Edward Darling and Mary Wallace
Census:
31 Mar 1901 (age 66-67)
the Parish of Killesher, Co Fermanagh7
Address: the Townland of Gortatole
The household consisted of Edward who is a widower, his two sons Richard and Edward, and Edward's wife Mary. They were living in a three roomed cottage with a thatched roof which Edward rented from John Buchanan who lived in a large (11 roomed) house nearby. As well as the cottage the property also had a cow house, calf house, dairy, piggery, fowl house and shed which indicates that it was a small holding but the size is not known. Edward's occupation is shown as a herd(sman) which indicates that he looked after livestock. Whether it was on his own account or for John Buchanan is not known - probably a mixture of both. His two sons are shown as agricultural labourers which means they probably worked for John Buchanan.
Death:
2 Dec 1902 (age 67-68)
his home in the townland of Gortatole8

It is presumed that the term 'old age' is a synomyn for died in his sleep as the age of 64 given in his death registration is not paticularly old.
