In the 1861 Census he is described as a jouneyman miller (i.e. a person who has finished his apprenticeship and is working for someone else). The register for his marriage to Barbara Walder and the 1871 Census give his occupation as a miller. The 1881 and 1891 Censuses give his occupation as a miller working for someone else. The censuses indicate that he moved from employer to employer starting off working in windmills and then a water mill. It is assumed that he started work at the age of 12 and continued until sometime between the 1891 and 1901 Censuses when he became a cattle dealer.

Presumably on of the men was George Kennard who is described as a miller grinder. The other was probably George Smith.
