It is not clear from the available records into which regiment he enlisted but it was probably the 6th Battalion of the Royal Fusillers. His medical record on enlistment records that he was 5 ft 4 1/4 ins tall, weighed 104 lbs (7 1/2 stone), had a chest measurement of 34 ins with an expansion of 2 ins. He also had poor teeth. In other words he was probably severely undernourished.

Shortly after recruitment he was transferred to The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) 1st (Home Service) Battalion. Then in June 1917 he was transferred to the Royal Engineers Railway Troops at Bordon in France. After that he was posted as a Pioneer to the Railway Construction Troops. He appears to have overstayed his leave on two occasions by a day. On the first occasion in September 1918 he forfeited three days pay and on the second occasion in April 1819 he was confined to barracks for 14 days. Under the heading Acts of Courage it is noted that on 10 August 1919 he was involved in fighting a fire at the ammunition dump at Bourebourg.

His discharge was on medical grounds because of poor teeth requiring dentures. Dental treatment was ordered in lieu of pension.

The relationship of Sydney Farrance to the couple is unknown. He was probably a friend of the groom. Lewis Vye was almost certainly the bride's brother. The groom's father Hezekiah was almost certainly there. (His mother had died about four years before.) The bride's parents were probably there and possibly the couple's siblings but who else is not known.
