Individual Events and Attributes

  • Birth:

  • 1807 (est)

  • Spitalfields, Middlesex1 2 3

  •

  • With every suceeding census the year of his birth became earlier! In the 1851 Census he gave his age as 44 (i.e.born in 1807), in 1861 as 58 (i.e.born in 1803) and 1871 as 70 (i.e.born in 1801). The censuses also differ as to where he was born. The 1851 and 1871 Censuses say Spitalfields whereas the 1861 Census says Bethnal Green. A search of the IGI and FreeReg failed to produce a christening record so it has not been possible to establish an accuate date or place of birth. Given that he was almost certainly illiterate and may not have possessed a baptismal certificate it is thought that the earliest census is likely to be the most accurate.

  • -; Southwark, Middlesex4 5 6

  • labourer||In the 1851 Census he is shown as a willow cutter which is an unskilled job and probably seasonal. The willow was probably used in basket making. In the 1861 Census he is shown as a labourer. In the 1871 Census when he is living with his daughter no occupation is given.

It is assumed that he worked as an labourer in a succession of jobs which may have been seasonal picking up work wherever he could from the age of 12 until he either was too infirm to work or could not find workwhen he was over 60.
