frm 1894 to 1940 (age 13-60)
cabinet maker, and carpet and lino fitter; Sussex and London5 6 7 3
The 1901 Census gives his occupation as a cabinetmaker in Hastings, however, all other records give his occupation as a carpet and lino fitter. After his marriage to Eliza Cooper in 1904 he moved to Hythe in Kent where he worked as a carpet planner and fitter. At the time of his second marriage to Harriet Dowell in 1933 was still working as a carpet fitter but had moved to Ramsgate. According to his sister-in-law Alice he came into a small inheritance when he was working for a firm in the Ramsgate area. Looking at the timing it was probably from his mother Sarah. Apparently, he opened a bank account at a time when working class people used cash and might have a Post Office savings account but did not have bank accounts, and carried a cheque around with him at work offering loans to his fellow workers. Whether they took him up on this is not known but when it came to making staff redundant the owner of the firm sacked him – probably because he thought that if he had money he didn't need a job! After this he moved to London and he and his wife Harriet (Ett) lived with Ett's sister Alice and he opened a second hand furniture shop in one of the streets off the Wandsworth Road. In 1939 at the start of WW2 he moved to Brighton to live with his brother Harry and his wife and has far as his nephew Jack can recall he did not work between then and his death in 1940.

Marriage Banns:
6 Mar 1904 (age 23)
St Leonard's and St Peter's Churches9
Address: Hythe and St Leonard-on-Sea, Kent respectively
St Leonard's was Edward's parish. Eliza's parish was St Peter's. St Leonard-on-Sea. The annotation 'Cert' in the margin of the register for St Leonard's indicates that the Vicar issued a certificate of the banns being called as the marriage must have taken place in Eliza's parish. Edward and Eliza would have attended the services at which the banns were read but who else was there is not known.
Marriage:
Apr 1904 (age 23)
Address: St Leonard-on-Sea, Kent
The 1911 Census records that they had been married for 7 years and did not have any children. The year was confirmed by their marriage registration. The place and month of their marriage is deduced from the bride's parish and the last date (20 March 1904) on which their Banns were read
Census for household:
2 Apr 1911 (age 30)
Hythe, Kent6
Address: 22 Stade Street
The household consisted of Edward, his first wife Eliza (née Cooper) and his mother-in-law Eliza Cooper.
Census for household (not recorded):
19 Jun 1921 (age 41)
Spouse:
Marriage:
29 Jul 1933 (age 53)
Address: Ramsgate, Kent
William was the bride's brother and Ethel was her niece. Who else was at the wedding is not known but Harriet's sister Alice who was a domiciliary midwife in Ramsgate would have made every effort to attend as the sisters were close. How Edward and Harriet met is a matter of speculation as before their marriage Edward was living in Ramsgate and Harriet was living in London. It can only be assumed that they met when Harriet was on holiday in Ramsgate.
They had no children of their own and Harriet (presumably supported by her husband) wanted to adopt her sister Alice's child Jack.14
