5 Apr 1891 (age 37-38)
Sedlescombe, Sussex13
Address: the Coach & Horses
As Edward is described as a Licensed Victualler it is assumed that he was the licensee of the Coach and Horses. Whether he owned the premises or was tenant is not known. However, it is probable that he had been there for some time as all their children had been born in Sedlescomb, the oldest, Harry, being 14 at the time of the census. Laura, Edward and Frederick are described as scholars so presumably went to the local school.

Marriage:
12 Dec 1894 (age 40-41)
Address: Islington, Middlesex
The marriage which was by licence was performed by the Rev. Pryor who was the Curate. Why they were married in Islington when neither of them seemed to have any connection with the area is not known. However, the fact that they were married by licence would indicate that wished for a quiet wedding. Before their marriage the bride stayed at 55 Gibson Square in Islington which the 1901 Census indicates was a lodging house. Thus, so as far as the bride was concerned it was almost certainly a temporary address. The wife of the head of the household was Caroline Smith who was one of the witnesses at the wedding. Whether she was related to the bride is not known but it would seem rather doubtful as she was born in London and it is probable that she was asked by the bride to be a witness on a casual basis. As the groom groom's address was just given as Hastings it is our almost certain that he travelled to Islington for the wedding on the day. The relationship of the other witness, George Cotton, to the couple is unknown and he may also have been a casual witness.
After the wedding they probably retuned to Hastings.

The household consisted of Peter, his wife Sarah (formerly Mackellow), their son Peter (age 5), and Sarah's three chilldren by her previous marriage Edward (age 20), Frederick (age 16) and Alfred (age 11). There is also a servant Helen Cross who probably works in Peter's public house.
