  •

  • Cause: scarlatina

    Address: 10 Abbey Road

Scarlatina is a contagious infection that mostly affects young people and was a leading cause of death in children in Victorian time. Judging from the number of deaths from scarlatina recorded in the register page containing Lucy's death there must have been a severe outbreak in Great Grimsby at that time.

It is conceivable that her Father Edward who was a Baptist minister brought the infection into the house. He was a very caring pastor and his services would have been in demand to visit bereaved families and those whose children were near to death.

  • Burial:

  • 3 Jan 1883 (age 2 yrs 8 mns)

  • Great Grimsby Cemetery5 6

  •

  • Address: Ainsley Street, Great Grimsby

The burial took place the day after her death presumably because she had died of scarlatina. The service which was taken by the Rev. J. J. Prescott would have been held in the Dissenters Chapel and followed by a short committal service at the grave. Her parents and grandparents on her mother's side would have been present and possibly her older sister Maggie, but is unlikely that her grandparents on her father's side who lived in Northumberland would have been present. Who else was there is not known. She was buried with her sister Mary in Plot 50/29.
