Simon's father was boilermaker and it would appear he followed in his father's footsteps. In the 1841 Census at the age of 14 he is described as a boilermaker presumably having been apprenticed at the age of 12. He is described as a boilermaker in the 1871 and 1891 Censuses. In the 1851 Census he is described as a blacksmith and in the register for his marriage to Catherine Chinn a smith. As a boilermaker he would have been able to work as a smith when he couldn't get work as a boilermaker and it is obvious that he was prepared to move around to find work. He ended up in Plymouth and it is possible that he worked in the Devonport Dockyard on Royal Navy ships.

with his children Mary (age 25), Elizabeth (age 23) and Stephen (age 15). The family lived in 2 rooms and shared the house with two other families who also had 2 rooms each and a widow who had one room. In all there were 11 people living there and the conditions must have been very crowded. Elizabeth is working as a tailoress and is shown as being employed but whether she worked at home or in a workshop or factory is not known. Quite a number of their neighbours are described as dressmakers or seamstress so there may have been a factory nearby. Stephen is working as a printer. Mary is not shown as having an occupation so presumably she kept house.

William was probably a friend of the groom and Harriet was almost certainly related to the bride - probably her sister or possibly her mother. Simon's parents were dead although his father John is not shown as deceased in the register. If the Bride's parents were alive they would almost certainly have attended. Who else was there is not known.
