On his son's Marriage Certificate in 1899 he is described as an upholsterer so he could have well moved from upholstering fruniture to (horse drawn) coaches torailway carriages. It is assumed that he was apprenticed at 14 and continued to work until he was 65 for a number of different firms. Sometime between 1881 and 1891 he moved to the Clapham and may well have worked for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway which had a large depot at Clapham.

The initial source for the date is Ann's bible which was given to her by Mary Louisa, Hilda Beatrice, George and Grace Monica Herbert who must have been friends as a wedding present. The date is confirmed by the register entry for William and Ann's marriage which provides the place and other details. Apart from the witnesses it is not known who else attended the wedding. But probably the groom's and bride's parents were there. Also the bride's friends who gave the Bible as a wedding present.

Census for household:
31 Mar 1901 (age 57-58)
Clapham, Wandsworth, London13
Address: 120 Manor Street
The household consisted of William Rosam, his wife Ann, their daughter Ada (age 23), their Granddaughter Ada Clarke (age 6), and three boarders Herbert Barnes, Ernest Boarer & Curt Grafe. The household occupied 4 rooms so assuming that the lodgers shared a room William's family has three room to themselves - probably a living room which also served as a kitchen and two bedrooms. There was probably a privey in the yard and maybe a wash house with a copper.
