In the 1891 Census his occupation is given as a 'clerk to railway agent'; on his Marriage Certificate in 1899 his occupation is given as a clerk which is amplified to 'railway booking clerk' on the Birth Certificate for his daughter Doris in 1900. All these were within the Clapham area. In 1909 after he had moved to Edinburgh he is shown as a Managing Clerk on his daughters' Winifred's and Ella's Birth Certificates. It is known that by the time that he moved to Scotland he was was working for Thomas Cooke, the travel agents, and it would appear that he moved to Scotland on promotion. It is also known that he remained with the firm for the remainder of his working life areturning to London where he was employed on meeting and escorting VIPs who were travelling with Thomas Cooke until he retired. Whether he started his working life with the company is not known.

Before being taken into hospital he was living with his wife Emily at 10, Grove Road, Thornton Heath. His daughter Lilian and her son Donald and Don's wife Pat were also living there. It is not known how long he was in hospital before he died but it appears from the death certificate that he had had a recent operation to either investigate or remove the carcinoma.

The groom and the bride gave the same address on the Marriage Certificate - 120, Manor Street which is where the William was living with his parents at the time of the 1891 Census. It is therefore assumed that Emily was lodging with the Rosams. One of the witnesses was a George Gudgin which could have been her father or her brother. The relationship of the other witness Elizabeth Clarke, if any, is unknown.
