Sometime between 1841 and 1851 William either lost or left his tailoring job and moved from Uffculme to Tiverton where he found job as an agricultural labourer. He remained there for the next 20 years continuing to work as an agricultural labourer probably through annual hiring fairs until sometime sometime between 1861 and 1871 he moved to Plymouth and became a chair caner. What prompted the move is not known. By the time of the 1881 Census he had become a general labourer and probably remained one until he died.

The relationship of the visitor to the household is unknown. Her age which is given as 21 makes her too young to be Susanna's sister. William is working as an agricultural labourer and all the children except for Emma are shown as attending school.

The household consisted of William, his wife Susan and their children Minda (age 21), Caroline (age 19), Emma (age 10), Ellen (age 9) and Albert (age 4). They were also minding a 4 month old child William Harvey. William is working as an agricultural labourer. His wife Susan and his daughter Caroline are working as char women so obviously money was tight especially as Minda was suffering from consumption and is unable to work. The three youngest children are shown as being at school.
