His year of birth calculated from his age (66) given in the 1901 Census, which also records his place of birth as St Pancras, is 1835. However the register entry for his baptism gives his date of birth as 17 July 1834. This is just under 2 years before his baptism and the Vicar has annotated the register 'said to be born' which means that he took the parents word for it! At the time of his baptism his parents were living in Carburton Street but as people seemed to move frequently James may not have been born there.
