The relationship of the witnesses to the groom and bride is not known. At the time of his marriage Albert was in the Army stationed at Farnham and Mable was living in Farnham although they probably met in London where they both lived before Albert enlisted; otherwise why would Mabel move from London where she had been born and brought up to Farnham? Albert's Military Record indicates that he married without permission probably because he was only 20 at the time. He concealed his military identity giving his occupation as a clerk and an address in Farnham. However, he must have reported it (probably when he became 21) because his military record gives the date and town of the marriage, the names of the Registrar and the witnesses but not the place. Family oral history says that Albert's first wife was a Roman Catholic and so it was surprise to find out that it was a civil marriage although this would not have precluded Mabel from being a Roman Catholic. However, Mabel was baptised into the Church of England. After Albert reported their marriage Mabel is shown as his next of kin and her address is given as 4 Mary Road, Guildford, Surrey.

His Military History sheets are damaged and in some places the writing has faded. However, there appears to be an entry showing that they adopted a child named Cecil Barnard Holman Holman who was born on 16 Mar 1914 in West Boyhton.

  • Marriage break up:

  • 1913 (age 22-23)10

  • In the review of his Amy pension in June 1920 Albert states that he has been separated from his wife for 7 years and that he did not adopt the child (Cecil Barnard Holman Holman) who is now in the guardian's charge. He does not say who the guardian is.
