The 1891 Census which took place on 5 April gives his age as 2 months, his parent's names and the place they were living. The same address is given in his baptismal record so it is assumed that he was born there. Although his military record does not give his date of birth he attested on 5 February 1908 which means he was 17 and confirms that he was born at the beginning of February in 1901.

  • His Service Record which was damaged in the War Office fire in WW2 does not give any indication of where he was posted other than he was posted as a Gunner and moved frequently. He was employed as an Officer's Servant and Chauffeur. His record says "Sober hard working man who gives satisfaction to his master."

At the end of his time he was transferred to the Army Reserve.

Whilst in the RASC he was appointed acting Corporal on 20 May 1918 and acting Sergeant on 7 August 1918. In both the RHA and RASC he was employed as a motor driver. His service record says that he served in France but where is not clear. His record says that he was wounded although the nature of his wound is not shown. It is known from his disability pension record that he was gassed. His Medal Record shows that he was awarded the 1914/15 Star, the british Ward Medal and the Victory Medal. He was transferred to Section "B" Army Reserve on demobilisation on 13 August 1918.

His address on discharge is given as 2 Eldridge Road, Bermonsey and he is shown as being married. Interestingly his age is given as 30 whereas he was actually 28 so he may have lied about his age when he enlisted. That was not uncommon.

  • Address: 35 Hillside Road, Brandon, Suffolk

Administration with a will is a legal process that takes place when a deceased person's will is valid but there is no executor who is able or willing to act. The process involves the appointment of a personal representative to administer the estate. This personal representative is granted letters of administration with the will annexed.

His estate was worth £2,631 which is surprisingly low as he and his wife owned their house at Hillside. Presumably it excluded the value of the property which passed to his wife. His estate would also have gone to her as there were no other relatives.

Marriage (1)

1911, Certified Copy of an Entry of Marriage forAlber Charles Holman and Mabel Alice Castro

  • Spouse:

  • Mabel Alice Castro (1890-1952)

  • Marriage:

  • 29 Jul 1911 (age 20)

  • the Register Office14 15 16

  •

  • Address: Farnham, Surrey

The relationship of the witnesses to the groom and bride is not known. At the time of his marriage Albert was in the Army stationed at Farnham and Mable was living in Farnham although they probably met in London where they both lived before Albert enlisted; otherwise why would Mabel move from London where she had been born and brought up to Farnham? Albert's Military Record indicates that he married without permission probably because he was only 20 at the time. He concealed his military identity giving his occupation as a clerk and an address in Farnham. However, he must have reported it (probably when he became 21) because his military record gives the date and town of the marriage, the names of the Registrar and the witnesses but not the place. Family oral history says that Albert's first wife was a Roman Catholic and so it was surprise to find out that it was a civil marriage although this would not have precluded Mabel from being a Roman Catholic. However, Mabel was baptised into the Church of England. After Albert reported their marriage Mabel is shown as his next of kin and her address is given as 4 Mary Road, Guildford, Surrey.

His Military History sheets are damaged and in some places the writing has faded. However, there appears to be an entry showing that they adopted a child named Cecil Barnard Holman Holman who was born on 16 Mar 1914 in West Boyhton.

  • Marriage break up:

  • 1913 (age 21-22)17

  •

  •

  • In the review of his Amy pension in June 1920 Albert states that he has been separated from his wife for 7 years and that he did not adopt the child (Cecil Barnard Holman Holman) who is now in the guardian's charge. He does not say who the guardian is.

Marriage (2)

1939, 1939 Register for Family of Albert C. Holman in Wimbledon, Surrey

  • Spouse:

  • Elsie Ada Connett Herniman (1893-1962)

  • Marriage:

  • 19 Nov 1921 (age 30)

  • the Parish Church of All Souls18

  •

  • Address: Marylebone, London

Charles was the Groom's father. The couples relationship to the other witness is unknown. Who else was there is not known but probably Albert's mother and the bride's mother (her father was dead).

The marriage was bigamous because Albert was still married to Mabel Castro although that marriage lasted only two years. The bride and her family would not have known that the marriage was bigamous and it is unlikely that the groom's family would have known of Albert's first marriage otherwise his father would not have signed the register, which describes Albert as a batchelor, as a witness.

  • 1939 Register (Household):

  • 29 Sep 1939 (age 48)

  • Wimbledon, Surrey19

  •

  • Address: 53 Garage Quarters, 54 Parkside

Judging from the address and adjacent entries Albert was chauffeur to Archbishop William Godfrey who was the Apostolic Delegate to Great Britain (ecclesiastical diplomat serving as a permanent diplomatic representative of the Holy See)

  • Marriage break up:

  • btw 1951 and 1954 (age 59-63)

  • a flat19 20 21 22 23

  •

  • Address: 66 Barrow Road, Steatham

The 1939 Register and the Electoral Registers for 1946, 1949 and 1951 show them living together. However, the 1955 Electoral Register shows Elsie living by herself at 66 Barrow Road. As the qualifying date for this register is 10 October 1954 Albert must have left sometime before then. The reason for the breakup is unkown but it appears that Albert left Elsie as Elsie continued to live at Barrow Road until the end of her life. He does not reappear as registered voter until 1957 Register the qualifing date for which is 10 October 1956 by which time he is living with Win Rosam at 8 Fontaine Road. It is strongly suspected that he left Elsie for Win but how they met is not known.

Albert and Win lived together until Albert was free to marry. Family oral history says that Albert's first wife was a Roman Catholic and would not give him a divorce to marry Win. Research has shown this not to be the case. He married Mabel Castro who was baptised into the Church of England when he 20. It is thought that the marriage did not last long and he entered into a bigamous marriage with Elise Herniman who was also a protestant when he was 30. As Albert had left Elsie it was up to her to start divorce proceedings and probably Albert did not press her to do so for fear that his bigamous marriage would be discovered. Whether his first wife being a Roman Catholic was a story generated by Albert to explain why he was not able to obtain a divorce or there was a degree of confusion in the family brought about by the fact that he had been chauffeur to Archbishop William Godfrey who was the Apostolic Delegate to Great Britain, the fact remains that he did not feel free to marry until after Elsie died in July 1962. He was almost certainly informed of her death by his sister Maud Holman who registered Elsie's death. Win obviously knew of Albert's marriage to Elsie and the fact that he kept in touch with his sister. She probably did not know of his first marriage to Mabel Castro. Unfortunately Albert and Win only had two years together as a married couple as Albert died in 1964. How they met and when they started to live together is not known. The earliest record held in personal archives is the joint invitation to the wedding of Win's God-daughter Dorothy Sayer on 19 May 1955 which was probably sent early that year. Pat Wallace who at the time was engaged to Win's nephew Don Boyle also remembers them living together in 1955 at 8 Fontaine Road, Streatham. A search of the electoral registers shows that Albert had 'moved in' by the qualifying date of 10 October 1956 for the 1957 Register.

Pat and Don Boyle and their young son Andrew were guests.
