John and Mary Brown were present at the burial of their child Lucy on 13 January 1873 in Great Grimsby Cemetery, Ainsley Street, Great Grimsby according to the Church of England rite. The minister at the burial was the Rev. Edward Lauderdale. The service would have been held in the Dissenters Chapel and followed by a short committal service at the grave. Her parents would have been present and possibly her siblings George, Mary Ann and Clara. Who else was there is not known. She was buried in Plot 50/29 with her nieces Mary and Lucy Lauderdale.

  • John Brown was a mourner at the burial of Mary Maitland Lauderdale on 1 February 1878 in Great Grimsby Cemetery, Ainsley Street, Great Grimsby according to the Church of England rite. The mourners included John Brown and Mary Jane Marriott. The service which was taken by the Rev. J Fordyce would have been held in the Dissenters Chapel and followed by committal service at the grave. Her parents and grandparents on her mother's side would have been present but is unlikely that her grandparents on her father's side who lived in Northumberland would have been present. Who else was there is not known.

  • Death of spouse Mary

  • Spouse:

  •

  • Address: 10 St James Terrace, Bargate

The household consisted of John and his children George, Ann and Alice. There were also two servants - Lucy Clark who was the cook and Alice Moore who was a housemaid. Although Alice (age 25) is shown as John's daughter she has not been recorded in previous Censuses for John.

  • Mourner:

  • 3 Jan 1883 (age 66)

  • John Brown was a mourner at the burial of Lucy Maitland Lauderdale on 3 January 1883 in Great Grimsby Cemetery, Ainsley Street, Great Grimsby according to the Church of England rite. The mourners included John Brown. The burial took place the day after her death presumably because she had died of scarlatina. The service which was taken by the Rev. J. J. Prescott would have been held in the Dissenters Chapel and followed by a short committal service at the grave. Her parents and grandparents on her mother's side would have been present and possibly her older sister Maggie, but is unlikely that her grandparents on her father's side who lived in Northumberland would have been present. Who else was there is not known. She was buried with her sister Mary in Plot 50/29.

  • Death:

  • 24 May 1891 (age 75)

  • Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire9 10

  •

  • Address: St James Terrace, Bargate

The cemetery register for his burial gives the date and place of his death

  • Burial:

  • 27 May 1891

  • the Great Grimsby Old Cemetery9 11

  •

  • Address: Ainsley Street

If it was large funeral it would almost certainly have taken place in the Baptist Tabernacle which he had built. A smaller funeral sevice would have taken place in the Dissenters Chapel at the cemetery. In both cases the funeral service would have been followed by a short committal service at the graveside. It is noted from the register page that E. Lauderdale was the Officiating Minister at some of of the burials. As Edward Lauderdale was John Brown's son-in-law (married to his daughter Mary) it is surprising that the service was not taken by him. Who else was there is not known although although a number of friends and business acquaintances were almost certainly present

Although he was buried in the same section as his wife Jane he was not buried in the same grave. Jane was buried in Plot 50/21; John was buried in Plot 50/13. He would certainly have had a memorial but in 1959 the entire burial ground was cleared and memorials were destroyed and buried. No record of his memorial can be found.
