In the 1901 Census Mary gives her birthplace as Alderstone in Wiltshire. However in all previous Censuses including the 1861 Census which took place just a month after she was born her birthplace is given as Martin, Wiltshire. Martin is a village which is about 7 miles northwest of Fordingbridge where her father was working at the time of her birth. Up to 1895 it was in Wiltshire although now it is in Hampshire. There is an Alderstone Farm near Whiteparish and the Doomsday Book records an Alderstone with only four small households just to the west of Whiteparish. Alderstone is about 12 miles northeast of Fordingbridge. On balance it is considered that Martin is her most likely birthplace. This is confirmed by her Baptismal Register entry,
