Charles Mould (1846-1915)

Individual Events and Attributes

  • Birth:

  • Apr 1846

  • Teffont, Wiltshire2 3

  •

  • As it was normal practice to baptise children within a few weeks of birth it is assumed that he was born in April. His baptismal record gives his patents' residence as Tisbury so it is assumed that he was born there. However the distance between Tisbury and Teffont Evias is nearly 4 miles - a good hour and and ten minutes walk. The 1871 Census give his birthplace as Teffont, the 1881 Census as Teffont Magna.

  •

  • From census information which provide snapshots of his employment at 10 year intervals it is obvious that he moved jobs frequently probably offering his services at annual hiring fairs. In 1861 at the age of 15 he and his father Henry are working as agricultural labourers in East Tisbury. It is almost certain that Charles has started work at the age of 12 - if not sooner. The 1871 Census shows him working as a carter at Joyde's Farm which was owned by George Waters who employed 18 men and 8 boys on a farm of 1,000 acres. The 1881 Census shows him working as a yardman for F. P. Bailey who farmed 60 acres in Wherwell, Hampshire. The 1891 Census shows him as being employed as a carter probably at Blackbrook Farm in Fareham which was managed by William Paton. By the time of the 1901 Census he had moved on and become a farm bailiff in South Hayling. However, in the 1911 Census although he records himself as an agricultural labourer he does not record his employer or the fact that he was working so presumably he was unemployed. Whether he ever worked again is not known.
