Individual Events and Attributes

  • Birth:

  •

  •

The 1851 Census gives his age as 50 and his place of birth.

  • Occupation:

  • frm 1815 to 1876 (age 13-75)

  • gardener; Haddenham, Buckinghamshire

  •

  • The 1841, '51, '61 and '71 Censuses all record him as a gardener. The 1841 Census records him as a labourer which indicates that he may have been a gardener. The 1881 records him as a retired gardener. The fact that he was living in a different place in every census indicates that he was a jobbing gardener working for a number of different people rather than a single employer or growing produce for sale. He probably started working around the age of 12 and continued until he could work no more around the age of 75.

  • Census:

  • Haddenham, Buckinghamshire2

  •

  • Address: Church End

He is sharing the property with William Richmond, Mary Richmond and Sarah Cooling. From the information given in the census the relationship between the Richmonds is difficult to determine particularly as in the 1841 Census ages were only needed to be recorded to the nearest 5 years although it is noted that on the previous page some 'exact' ages are given. William is listed first followed by Joseph and Mary. William (aged 45) and Horace (aged 40) were probably brothers. Mary (aged 40) could have been a sister or either William's or Joseph's wife. Sarah Cooling (aged 60) was almost certainly a lodger.

  • spouse:

  • 1887 (age 85-86)

  • Death of spouse Hannah

  • Death:

  • 1888 (age 87)

  • Haddenham, Buckinghamshire3

  •

  • The Registration District of Aylesbury includes the village of Haddenham where Joseph had lived for most of his life so he almost certainly died there.
