where he was the Shoemaker Attendant which presumably meant that he repaired the inmates' shoes. Judging from the fact that there were about 30 staff and something approaching 400 inmates it must have been a very large institution. It is surprising to see that there is only two doctors for all those inmates and the emphasis must have been on control rather than cure. The conditions must have been pretty terrible. The senior doctor (Medical Superintendent) lived in with this family - his wife was the matron.

Although Joseph is shown as being married his wife must have lived elsewhere although where is not known as her census record could not be found and it is thought she died in 1867. This is reinforced by the fact that their son Horace was living with his uncle in Haddingham.
