  • Cause: liver cancer and old age

Old age (senility on his death certificate) is not normally given as a cause of death unless the person is over 80 and the doctor certifying the death has cared for that person for a long time and noticed a gradual decline in health and functioning. His wife had died in January so his daughter Gertrude was looking after him and gives her address as 126 Hercies Road which was her father's house. Gertrude's house was next door at 128 so she may have moved in with him on a temporary basis not only to better care for him but also to get away from her husband who was an alcoholic.

After his death the house was sold. It is known that his son William benefited from the sale but whether Gertrude did as well is not known. (Her father had given her and her husband 128 Hercies Road some years before.)
