  • The 1851 and 1861 Censuses give his occupation as a gardener. This is amplified in the 1861 Census to show that he was a domestic gardener. Given the nature of the area in which he lived it is assumed that he was a jobbing gardener. He probably started working with his father who was also a gardener at the age of 12 and gave up sometime between 1861 and 1871 at which time he shown as a publican in the Census.
