milk vender2
In the 1851 Census she is shown a milk vender. This is the only census where Mary is shown as having an occupation. In the same census her husband William is shown as a gardener but there is no indication as to whether he worked a jobbing gardener for other people or had a market garden growing vegetables to sell. In documents which give his occupation he is variously referred to as a gardener or a cow keeper so perhaps as well as being a market gardener he also kept cows and Mary helped by selling their milk.
The dates are based on William's first record as cow keeper (the baptism of their first child William) to William's death. In the 1871 Census (the last Census before William died) he is shown as a dairyman.
