1901, 1901 Census for Henry Fippen in Shoreditch Workhouse

  • Birth:

  • 1833 (cal)

  • Charmouth, Dorset2

  •

  • In the 1881 Census his age is given as 48 and his place of birth as Charmouth.

  • Census (living with parents):

  • 6 Jun 1841 (age 7-8)

  • 1841 Census - living with parents

  • Occupation:

  • frm 1845 to 1865 (age 11-32)

  • boot and shoe maker or cordwainer; Charmouth and London3 1 4

  •

  • He is shown as a cordwainer (an old term for a bootmaker) in the 1851 Census, a shoemaker in the register entry for his marriage to Mary Trott in 1852 and a bootmaker in the 1861 Census. It is assumed that he was apprenticed at the age of 12 when he was living in Charmouth. (In the 1841 Census his brother James aged 16 was shown as a shoemaker's apprentice and Henry could well have followed his brother into the trade.) He gave up bootmaking sometime between the 1861 and 1871 Censuses and became a confectioner. The reason is not known.

  • Census:

  • 30 Mar 1851 (age 18)

  • Chelsea, Middlesex3

  •

  • Address: 2 College Terrace

He was lodging with the Bindon family. The household consisted of Francis Bindon, his wife Susannah, their niece Sarah Adams, and three lodgers - George Challis, Edward Lidiard and Henry. They shared the house with two other families - one of seven and the other of three. The size of the house is unknown.

  • Occupation:

  • frm 1865 to 1900 (age 31-67)

  • confectioner; London5 5 6 7 8 9

  •

  • All the Census records from 1871 onwards show him as a confectioner. The 1881 Census shows his wife and two of his sons - John and Amos - also working as confectioners. The 1891 Census says that he is working on his own account and the 1901 Census taken when he was in the workhouse and described as a pauper is more specific that his trade was in sweets. Making sense of this information is difficult. It would appear that he was reasonably successful to start with but whether he was making his own sweets or just retailing them cannot be determined. Also whether he had his own shop or was just hawking them. What is certain is that the business ran downhill and he ended up a pauper in the workhouse.

  • Census:

  • 31 Mar 1901 (age 67-68)

  • St Leonard, Shoreditch10

  •

  • Address: Shoreditch Workhouse

His wife Mary was in the women's section of the workhouse.

  • Death:

  • 1906 (age 74)

  • Shoreditch Workhouse11

  •

  • Address: Kingsland Road, Shoreditch, London

Without a Death Certificate it is not possible to be sure that he died in the workhouse but it seems unlikely that he left the workhouse after his admission in January 1900. The Workhouse Register does not give a discharge date nor does it indicate that he died there.
