Apart from this his service record gives very little detail except that he forfeited 1d Good Conduct Pay on 17 Apr 1894 which was restored on 17 Oct 1894. The reason is not given but given the circumstances was probably for drunkenness.

  • fruiterer and costermonger; Hoxton, London5 5 6 7

  •

  • It would appear that after he left the Army he worked initially as fruiterer and then as a costermonger until the family moved from the Shoreditch area sometime between September 1906 and October 1910.

  • Residence:

  • 2 Nov 1902 (age 32-33)

  • Occupation:

  • frm 1908 to 1918 (age 38-49)

  • stoker; the Midland Hotel11 12

  •

  • Address: Kings Cross, London

It is assumed that he started working at the Midland Hotel sometime between September 1906 and October 1910 when the family moved from Shoreditch to Holborn presumably because he lost his job as fruiterer, and that he worked there until his death in 1918.

  • Death:

  • 1918 (age 48-49)

  • Pancras, London13

  •

  • probably of Spanish 'flu.||Without a Death Certificate it is impossible to be sure of the cause but the quarter in which his death was registered (June 1918) indicate that he may have been caught in the first wave of the pandemic . His sister-in-law died in the second wave in October 1918. The age given in the death registration was 47 but Fippen is such an unusual surname that this is considered to be sufficiently close to his calcuated age of 49

  • Death:

  • Jun 1919 (age 49-50)

  • Pancras, London14

  •

  • Fippen is an unusual surname so the registered 47 is sufficiently near to the calculated age of 49 to give confidence that this is the correct entry.

1911, 1911 Census for Household of Thomas Fippen in Clerkenwell, London

  • Spouse:

  • Caroline Emma Dowell (1882-1957)

  • Children:

  • Caroline Rebecca Fippen (1903-1908)

  •

  • Arthur William Fippen (1904- )

  •

  • May Eleanor Fippen (1906-1991)

  •

  • Mary Fippen ( - )

  •

  • Rebecca I. Fippen ( -1917)

  • Marriage:

  • 2 Nov 1902 (age 32-33)

  • St Saviour's Church17 18

  •

  • Address: Hoxton, London

Louisa was her younger sister of the bride; the other witness Thomas Dowell was the bride's father. Why a member of the groom's family did not act as a witness is not known. However, the groom's oldest child from his previous marriage, Thomas Fippen, would have been too young at 11 and his parents although still alive were in the Shoreditch Workhouse so probably did not attend the wedding. From the date of birth of their first child, Caroline (10 April 1903), it seems that the bride may have been pregnant when she went to the altar. As the couple were living at the same address at the time of their marriage there may have been an opportunity for this to happen. Who else was at the wedding is not known but Thomas' wife Rebecca who was the Bride's mother would almost certainly have been present and probably her siblings.

  • Census for household:

  • 2 Apr 1911 (age 41-42)

  • Holborn, London19

  •

  • Address: 16 Affleck Street, Kings Cross

The household consisted of Thomas, his wife Caroline and their children Arthur William (age 7), May Elenor (age 5) & Mary Ethel (age 6 months). They shared the house with two other families, one of 4 and the other of 5, each of which had 2 rooms. This made a total of 14 people occupying 6 rooms.
