frm 1871 to 1886 (age 14-30)
In the 1871 he is shown as a ticket clerk together with is older brother George in Derby which means they were working for the Midland Railway. By the time of the 1881 Census he had moved to London and assuming that he was still working for the same company which seems likely considering where he was living he must have been a ticket clerk at St Pancras Station. Sometime between the 1881 and 1891 Censuses he gave up working as a ticket clerk and went to work in an electrical factory. The reason for the move is not known. The possibilities are that he was sacked, the pay was better or the job was more exciting than the drudgery of a ticket office.
