  • In the 1871 he is shown as a ticket clerk together with is older brother George in Derby which means they were working for the Midland Railway. By the time of the 1881 Census he had moved to London and assuming that he was still working for the same company which seems likely considering where he was living he must have been a ticket clerk at St Pancras Station. Sometime between the 1881 and 1891 Censuses he gave up working as a ticket clerk and went to work in an electrical factory. The reason for the move is not known. The possibilities are that he was sacked, the pay was better or the job was more exciting than the drudgery of a ticket office.

They are living in two rooms and sharing the house with 3 other families each of which have 2 or 3 rooms. In all 17 people live there.

    The children Arthur, Edith and William stayed overnight and were then sent on to St Margaret's Receiving Home, Leighton Road from where they were sent on to an 'appropriate' institution probably Leavesden Industrial School near Watford Hertfordshire which was known locally as St Pancras School.

    William left on the 27 August but there is no record of his wife Rebecca or their child Caroline leaving.
