  • The 1911 Census records that he is working for the Great Eastern Railway probably at St Pancras. The Parish Register for his marriage to Gertrude and the 1921 Census give his occupation as a railway clerk but do not indicate where he is working. The 1939 Register says that he is a Railway Clearing House Clerk. The Railway Clearing House was set up to manage the allocation of revenue collected by railway companies for the conveyance of passengers and goods over the lines (or using the rolling stock) of other companies. It went on to become the major regulatory body overseeing the day-to-day running of railways in Great Britain and setting common standards for railway companies, which ensured their safety and interoperability. The RCH also produced fare structures governing many aspects of rail transport at a national level and set limits on price increases for passenger travel. When he transferred from the Great Eastern Railway to the RCH is not known but it may have been in 1923 when the railway companies were grouped into four main companies.

Arthur was an alcoholic so how he managed to keep his job is a mystery - perhaps he only drank on the way home from work.

Gertrude (or Truda as she like to be called) told her nephew Jack Ward that the Judge said that it was one of the worst cases he had come across. At the time Gertrude was living in her brother William's bungalow Greenwood at Selsey and the case was reported in the local paper. Gertrude was amused that people thought that the case referred to the local builder who was called Arnot. Jack has not been able to find either the divorce record or the newspaper article.
