Occupation:
frm 1927 to 1932 (age 15-21)
electrical apprentice; H.M Dockyard3
Address: Devonport, Devon
He came first in the Dockyard Entrance Examination and the Headmaster of his school wanted him to be photographed by the local paper wearing his school cap but he refused. In the fourth year of his apprenticeship he took the Civil Service Examination and having come either first or second decided to join Customs and Excise.
Occupation:
frm 1932 to 1942 (age 20-31)
It is not known where he trained but it is known that at the time of his marriage he was serving as an Excise Officer in Cardiff. Although he worked for HMCE he was always adamant that he was an Excise Officer and thus was interested in ensuring the collection of excise duty, or more specifically the tax put on certain goods e.g. tobacco and liquor, and later the application of Purchase Tax which was introduced in October 1940.
Military Service:
frm 1942 to 1945 (age 30-34)
In WW2 the army was recruiting from the Customs & Excise and George volunteered telling his wife Glad that he would volunteer before he was conscripted. It is not known exactly when he joined the Army but he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the R.E.M.E. on 1 Dec 1942, promoted to Lieutenant on 1 Jun 1943 and Temporary Captain on 31 Oct 1944. He served in the U.K. on the calibration of anti-aircraft guns guns and also took part in planning the redeployment of anti-aircraft guns from round London to the south coast - presumably in the hope that enemy aircraft would be shot down before they had a chance to reach London.
After George told his wife Gladys, or she learned, that he was taking Mary Spencer-Churchill (Churchill's daughter and later Mary Soames) out to tea she dressed up (her brother Harry said she looked very nice) and went up to London presumably to remind George that he was married! Mary Spenser-Churchill joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1941 and served in London in mixed anti-aircraft batteries, so it is quite possible that George had met her in the course of his duties.
It is not known when he was demobilised but it is assumed that it was sometime in 1945 after the cessation of hostilities.
