The relationship of the witnesses to the couple is not known. J Price was probably a friend of the groom. Thomas English may have been the bride's father or brother. Probably members of the groom's and bride's families were also present.
(It had been deduced from the 1871 Census record for Hezekiah Dowell that his wife Elizabeth had been married previously to an English. Their Marriage Register entry showed that her maiden surname was Sparks.)

According to the 1841 Census in Bethnal Green Joseph and his wife Elizabeth (33) had two children:-Joseph Fredrick(57) b. 1838George (58) b. 1839No trace of the family can be found in the 1851 Census but in the 1861 Census in Shoreditch Elizabeth is shown as a widow with two childrenElizabeth (59) b. 1848Thomas (36) b. 1852Elizabeth (Snr) married Hezekiah Dowell (32) in Q4 1861 so Joseph must have died between Q4 1852 (the latest that Thomas could have been conceived) and Q1 1861 (the 1861 Census).A trawl of the death index between Q1 1852 and Q4 1861 found only one possibility - Joseph English Q2 1851 in Newington. However, Newington is south of the Thames opposite the City of London and there is no other evidence that the family crossed the river as both the 1841 Census (for Joseph and Elizabeth) and 1861 Census (for the widowed Elizabeth) were north of the river. In addition an 1851 Census entry was found for a Joseph English and his wife Harriett living in Newington thus elimina.
